The sound design for the film is largely diegetic. On location recordings were fairly limited and so lots needed re-creating in the studio.
Moments of tension and discomfort was a large part of the brief. Giving the strong sense of hierarchy between characters through sudden stabs of sound.
The protagonist almost narrates the goings on through his own voice, booming within his head. Getting this idea across was crucial so the environmental sounds becoming muffled and muted opened up the idea that your journeying into his mind to hear these thoughts.
